Great Torrington is renowned
for its great festivals and community events.
The world- famous and much publicised group of volunteers,
The
Torrington Cavaliers [more..],
often coordinate events in the town and are particularly
famous for their spectacular bonfires, the last being
a full size replica of HMS Victory to celebrate the anniversary
of the Battle of Trafalgar. The commemoration of the Battle
of Torrington is a magnificent annual event in mid-February
with torchlit procession and free fire work display.
Every Spring, visitors join locals
to celebrate the traditional May Fair, first held
in 1554. Torrington Carnival is also in May and many
music and arts events are held in June as part of the North
Devon Festival. RHS Garden Rosemoor has a huge programme
of special events, particularly popular is the Rose Festival
in June and the September Festival.
Apple days and special Halloween events
are held in the autumn, culminating in the Great Torrington
Christmas Festival and Big Sing. The Plough Arts Centre
in the centre of the town also has a full and varied programme
of theatre, film and music producing unique and memorable
entertainment for all ages, with a wonderful community atmosphere,
throughout the year.
There's so much to do all year round...
