The
Tarka Trail (a 180 mile cycling and walking track) follows
the routes of North Devon's old railway lines from Braunton
to Meeth with the stretch by Great Torrington passing through
beautiful, deep wooded valleys and riverside tracks.
This is undoubetedly some of the most attractive
scenery in the region.
Named after Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter, the
Torridge river valley below Great Torrington lies in the
very heart of Tarka Country, a wonderful landscape that
has remained practically unchanged since Williamson found
the inspiration to write his novel in the 1920s.
